Kume affair
The Kume affair (久米邦武筆禍事件 Kume Kunitake Hikka Jiken) refers to the forced resignation of Kume Kunitake from the University of Tokyo in 1892. He published in 1891 an article in the Shigaku zasshi in which he stated that "Shinto is an ancient Heaven-worshipping custom".
