Kharode (Kharade-खराडे) is a sub-clan of the Bhonsle clan of the Maratha of India. They are found largely in Paschim Maharashtra.

History

The name Kharode (Kharade) comes from the village of Kharadi in Sangli district, when one of the Bhonsle group moved to Kharadi. Their former name was Bhonsle. The Bhonsle (or Bhonsale, Bhonslà, Bhosle) are a prominent warrior clan within the Maratha clan system who served as rulers of several states in India. The most prominent member of the royal clan was Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Titles associated with the Kharade group include Sardar, Sarkar, sarnoubat, Deshmukh, and Patil. They are also known as Kharade Patil. Kharade's are one among the Royal Maratha's of maharashtra

There are 96 Kuli (clan's) of Royal Maratha's and each of them are ancient. Maratha community is made of 60 Somvanshi and 36 Suryavanshi clans, thus the total number of clans of Marathas is 96. True Maratha Scattered due to their native place,heroic deed,Migration and some acts. example of Maratha Scattering as Parmar - Panwar - Powar - Puar -Dalvi - Nimbalkar - Naik Nimbalkar - Khardekar - Kharade - Ghorpade etc.

The clan has a presence in western Maharashtra areas like Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Pune. Kharades-Kharodes worship the same totems as Bhoite, Ghorpade, Kates and Bhosale.[1][2][3][4][5]

This subclan has produced many Maratha Generals. Kharodes(Kharade) served the Maratha Empire throughout its existence. The Sardar Subhanaji Kharode sarnoubat, General of the Maratha Navy, was a faithful of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Sardar Shetyaji Kharode and his son Sardar Fakirji Shetyaji Kharode died in battle against Shahapasand Khan, the Wazir of Abdali. Sardar Tanaji Kharode was active in the Battle of Baradi Ghat and the Third Battle of Panipat (1761).
