Karen Sue Pence (née Batten;[1] January 1, 1957[2]) is an American educator, teacher, painter, and the First Lady of Indiana since January 14, 2013. She is married to Indiana Governor Mike Pence, the Vice President-elect of the United States. She will assume the role of Second Lady of the United States on January 20, 2017.
Early life and education
Pence grew up in the Broad Ripple Village neighborhood of Indianapolis, where she graduated from Bishop Chatard High School.[3] She was the daughter of Lillian (née Hacker; 1931-2004)[4] and John Batten (d. 1988).[5] She attended nearby Butler University where she studied to become a teacher, and minored in art.[6] She received both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in elementary education from Butler University.
Career
She has taught at John Strange Elementary, Acton Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and the Orchard School, all in Indianapolis.[6] She and her husband met while she was playing guitar at Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church.[6]
After the birth of their first child, Karen decided to take a class in watercolor painting. This led to a career painting portraits of houses.[6]
Art as healing
Pence is known for dedication to promoting art as a way of healing.[7]
Second Lady of the United States
She will assume the role of Second Lady on January 20, 2017.
Family and personal life
Mike Pence and Karen Batten met at a Catholic church they both attended.[8] They became engaged in August 1984[6] and married on June 8, 1985.[6][9][10] The couple has three children: Michael, Charlotte, and Audrey.[6]
