KGSR is a Triple-A broadcast radio station licensed to Cedar Park, Texas, serving the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. KGSR is owned and operated by Emmis Communications and has undergone changes over time in its music selection and signal.[1] The station has studios along Interstate 35 in North Austin, and the transmitter site is located west of Liberty Hill.

History

The station began in 1961 as KLEN-FM (later KIXS-FM), a small local station serving Killeen and the Fort Hood area. During daylight hours, the station was simulcast on AM 1050, now KRMY. In 1986, KIXS upgraded its signal to reach Austin while still covering Killeen and relaunched as a CHR format with the new call letters KBTS "B93 FM". It was an immediate success, but a merger with competing top 40 station KHFI forced a series of format and call letter changes including KMMX (adult contemporary), KAJZ (smooth jazz and all-1970s' hits), and KLNC (country).

By 2001, the station returned to Top 40, this time as Dance-intensive KXMG, "Mega 93.3". It was also at this time that the ownership changed the city of license to Cedar Park.

In 2003, Emmis acquired the station and relaunched KXMG as Rhythmic CHR KDHT, "Hot 93.3".

On November 17, 2009, KDHT began stunting, leading to speculation that it would flip to Talk, but on November 20, 2009, Emmis revealed that KGSR would move over to the 93.3 frequency to start a 10-day simulcast until December 1, when KGSR's former 107.1 FM signal takes a Regional Mexican format as KLZT.

On December 13, 2010, KGSR began simulcasting on FM translator K274AX 102.7 FM. This lasted until October 20, 2011, when K274AX switched to a comedy format, relaying KGSR-HD3. The comedy format has had tremendous success in the Austin Arbitron ratings, peaking with a 3.8 share, and is the highest-rated HD Radio-fed FM translator station in the United States.

On May 30, 2013, K274AX began relaying KLZT-HD2's Spanish-language pop format as "Latino 102.7." [2] KGSR-HD3 now airs a heavy metal format based on sister station 101X's weekly specialty show "No Control Radio."[3][4]
