KFIO (1050 kHz) is an AM radio station licensed to Dishman, Washington and serves the Spokane media market. The station is owned by Thomas W. Read, through licensee Liberty Broadcasting System, LLC.[1]
The station broadcasts in the daytime at 25,000 watts but at night it must reduce power to 260 watts. That is because 1050 kHz is assigned as a clear channel frequency reserved for Mexico, so it cannot use a higher power that might interfere with Mexican radio stations.
History
KFIO first signed on in 1984 as KSPO. It was Spokane's Inspirational station but had to be divested when commonly owned KTBI 810AM, was granted 50,000 watts. The rules at that time would not allow two AM stations that overlapped in coverage to be commonly owned. That has now changed. On April 25, 2016 KFIO went silent to allow for the installation of a new 25,000 watt transmitter. KFIO is expected to be equipment testing late October 2016. www.kfio.info.
