Joy (character)

Joy is a fictional character and the protagonist of Inside Out. She is the personification of the emotions of joy and happiness. Joy is voiced by Amy Poehler.

Character

Amy Poehler describes Joy as being "the engine. She keeps everyone moving and happy. She represents the parts of Riley that are starting to change and become more complicated, and she is reluctant to let that change happen. She may be the most positive, but in many ways, she is the least flexible."

Inside Out

Joy was the first emotion to manifest after Riley's birth and the first memory Riley makes is a happy one (a yellow orb). Joy is soon followed by Sadness, then Fear, Disgust and finally Anger. For most of Riley's life Joy remains the dominant emotion, creating more memories than any of the other emotions. In addition, all of Riley's Core Memories, special memories from an important time in Riley's life that each power an aspect of her personality, are happy ones.

When Riley turns eleven her parents decide to move the family from Riley's hometown of Minnesota to San Francisco. It's at this point that Joy starts to lose her dominance and the other four emotions begin creating more memories than Joy. Joy attempts to make Riley happier with the move on her first day at her new school but things take a turn for the worse when Sadness touches a memory causing it to become sad and making Riley begin to cry in class. This causes a new Core Memory to be created, a sad one. While trying to dispose of it Joy and Sadness are sucked up the recall tube with all the Core Memories and sent to long term.
