Jorhat Engineering College (Assamese: যোৰহাট অভিযান্ত্ৰিক মহাবিদ্যালয়) is the second Government Engineering College of Assam in northeast India, established in 1960 by the government of Assam. The college is affiliated with Dibrugarh University and is accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education. [1]
The college has five four-year undergraduate programs: Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation and Mechanical Engineering. [2]The college also has one three-year postgraduate program in computer application leading to a Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.) degree, and two-year postgraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Location
Jorhat was the operational headquarters of the Ahom Kingdom prior to its fall to the British rule. The fourth biggest city of Assam, Jorhat city is 310 km east of Guwahati when travelled by road. It is well connected by road, railways and air. The city is located near the serene surroundings of Kaziranga National Park and Majuli, the biggest riverine island in the world.
The college is at the distance of four kilometers from the heart of the city. The Jorhat railway station is at a distance of 3 km and the Rowriah airport is 12 km[3]
Campus
Jorhat Engineering College is a fully residential college with a campus area of 200 acres (0.81 km2). The campus has nine student hostels including one girls hostel, with a total capacity of 900.
About 80% of the staff, both teaching and supporting, live on the campus which has a hospital with a resident doctor, a co-operative store, one primary school, playgrounds and an auditorium. The campus is 3.5 kilometers from the heart of the city.
Academics
4-year Bachelor of Engineering courses are offered in Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Civil Engineering. 3-year postgraduates are available for Master of Computer Application (MCA). 2-year Master of Engineering courses are also available for Production and Industrial Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, and Design of Civil Engineering Structure.
Master of Computer Application
The Department of Master of Computer Applications offers postgraduate course of three years duration. The intake capacity is 30 students per year. The library contains a collection of books, journals, project reports and magazines related to computers and Information Technology.Department focuses on new technologies like Oracle APEX, cloud computing, Big Data etc. Students of this department are absorbed in many national and multinational companies through campus interview.
Civil Engineering
The department of Civil Engineering offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) course of four years duration with an intake capacity of 75 students per year.
Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1961 has an intake capacity of 90 students per year. The Mechanical engineering department covers the design, physics, and theory of Mechanical engineering, including production systems and robotics.
Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering
The department of Electrical Engineering was established in the year 1961 next to the year of establishment of the college in 1960 with an initial intake capacity of 30 students which was increased to 60 after few years.
It took a pioneering role in establishing one new discipline Instrumentation Engineering in the year 1992 with an intake capacity of 20 students to meet the demand of Instrumentation Engineers for different industries such as oil, paper, tea, fertilizer etc. situated in N.E Region of India. This was the first institute in N.E Region who offered B.E degree in Instrumentation Engineering. Both the courses are approved by AICTE, New Delhi. Recently in the year 2009, AICTE has approved to increase the intake capacity of Instrumentation Engineering to 30. The courses are affiliated under Dibrugarh University, Assam. The course structure and syllabi of the subjects are modified at a regular interval of time to incorporate the recent developments in science & technology. Moreover department also emphasis to incorporate all the topics which are included in the syllabi of different all India level competitive examinations such as GATE, IES, IAS etc. in the present syllabi of Electrical & Instrumentation courses.
The department has highly qualified and experienced teachers specialized in different fields of electrical, instrumentation and electronics engineering. There are 10 well equipped laboratories for performing practical experiments and project works. The students passed out in these two disciplines are working India and abroad. Many of them are able to show excellent performance in their respective fields which are raising the glory of this prestigious institute.
Computer Science and Engineering
Established in 1987, the college offers BE degree in Computer Science & Engineering. The department offers the following AICTE approved subjects: Computer Architecturre and Organisation, Micro processors, Communication Engineering, Data Base Management System, Artificial Intelligence, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Interactive Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Algorithms, Distributed Computing etc. The department has a computer center which provides computing facilities to the students of the college. Workshop
The workshops accessible by students cover a wide range of machinery and include the machine shop, fitting shop, automobile shop, foundry shop, and others.
Training and Placement cell
The college has a separate Training and Placement Cell, under Training and Placement Officer. The cell also acts as a coordinator for the Industrial Training and Placement of pre-final and final year students.
This cell arranges Industrial Training program of about 30 days for the pre-final year students immediately after the completion of their 6th semester examination.
The Training and Placement Cell also guides and helps the final year students in securing jobs commensurate with their knowledge and achievements, by organizing campus interviews and exploring various avenues for their placement. The cell extends all possible help and provides all available infrastructure facilities to the organisations and their respective officials conducting campus interviews in the college campus.
The Office for the Training and Placement cell deals with communicating & inviting various companies for campus interview to the college, and also handles all the matters related to Industrial Training. The Control Panel is where campus interviews and discussions occur. Many notable technology, engineering, and design companies have participated in these interviews.
Hostel accommodation
There are eight boys hostels and one girls hostel. Each hostel has a superintendent and three or four monitors. Every hostel is equipped with a mess for dining, common room for the borders and rooms for recreational activities. Every hostel has its own library, reading room, gym, Internet Surfing and entertainment rooms. One lecturer/professor of the college is given responsibility as superintendent of every hostel.
Extracurricular activities and clubs
Phoenix
Phoenix - It is the national level techno-cultural festival of Jorhat Engineering College. Every year a plethora of events such as workshops, exhibitions, quiz, fashion show, gaming, robotics, dance and rock competitions attract a large number of participants from the entire NE region. Phoenix symbolises the unique spirit of JEC which always believes in providing a platform to all kind of talents and nurtering them by giving them an exposure.
Sifung
Sifung is the first poem magazine of the college. It was a joint venture of Sri Achyut Baruah and Shekharan phukan. Achyut Baruah edited its first issue in 2009. The magazine was at first a hostel V(JEC) initiative which was later published for the entire college.

Fotokraft
FotoKraft - the JEC Photography Club is an amateur photographers' club. It promotes interest in photography among students and does pictorial documentation of events in Jorhat Engineering College. This club was an initiative of Kaiche Mao, Tanuj Paniphukan, Chandan Jugal Kakoty, Jaydeep Deka and few others. The clubs has done a lot for the development of interest in photography and is one of the premiere photography club of the region
The JEC chronicle
Jorhat Engineering College was the first educational institution in NE India to have published a campus newspaper, in 1989.JEC managed to score this unique record in the journalistic history of Assam and this part of India by publishing the campus newspaper "JEC News", which was edited by a 3rd year civil engineering undergraduate student named Arnab Jan Deka. The JEC Chronicle was launched in the year 2010 in the lines of "JEC News". JEC Quiz Forum
The college has a legacy of producing some of the best quizzers of the region who brought laurels to the college by winning several state and national level competitions. JEC has a strong quizzing culture and the Quiz Forum is one of the most popular clubs of the college. The Quiz Forum organises various quiz competitions every year, out of which the BRAINGRILL, Jigyasha and James Daly's Anomaly are the most famous ones. It also organise online quiz series by the name X-QUIZ ME.

Avant Garde
Avant Garde - JEC Art Forum aims at exploring glorious artistic and creative talents of students, bringing together artist's of all fields on the campus and providing them a platform to showcase their potential in different forms of art along with uniting them. This club was an initiative of Thuli N. Chishi, Karmis Rongpipi and few others. Avant Garde organizes regional level art competition during Phoenix and have collaborated with various institute for promoting their art work.
Zatraa-Towards Destiny
Zatraa-Towards Destiny is an Assamese Film created by a bunch of creative students of JEC. The story of Zatraa revolves around the life of an engineering student and everything that an engineering student has to deal with be it ragging,friendships,love,hostel life,campus interview,career etc. .[5]
