Biography

Early life

Johan Van Mullem was born in Isiro in the Democratic Republic of Congo to Flemish parents, but spent much of his childhood following his diplomat father from country to country. From the age of seven to fourteen, Van Mullem lived in Tunisia, a country which deeply impacted him; “Since that wonderful time, my heart has been there. I have been forever torn between my Flemish roots and that marvelous Mediterranean culture. No other country has had such an impact on me. It was there that I began to draw, to fill my notebooks, and I have never stopped."[1]

Career

Johan Van Mullem’s oeuvre is characterized almost entirely by portraiture. He claims inspiration only from personal encounters with people on an everyday basis rather than aspiring to be like or to be inspired by any well-known artists. Van Mullem views his art as an extension of himself. More recently he has been exploring new directions such as Landscapes and abstract paintings. The place of Sculpture in the work of Johan Van Mullem is growing since 2014.
