Jamal A. Hill (born Dec. 25, 1972) is an American film director, writer, and producer. He made his directorial debut with Money, Power, Respect(2006), and has since directed such films as After Autumn(2007),[1] Streets (2011),[2] his theatrical debut with Brotherly Love[3] and most recently Deuces (2017).[4] Hill has acted in two of his own films.[5]
Hill’s movies tend to have common themes dealing with coming of age, inner city crime and family issues. Hill has been awarded the NAACP Image Award nomination and two ABFF Official selections among other awards including a Philadelphia Film Festival Official Selection.[6][7][8]
History and Achievements
Hill taught himself the art of screen writing and directing. After years of developing his craft in the music video arena Hill and his mother produced a $10,000 independent film entitled "Money Power Respect" from a 75 page script he wrote.[9]
He shot the film in eleven days and won the Philly Underground Music & Film festival and landed distributed through Jeff Clanagan's CodeBlack Entertainment. Soon after its release in 2006 a Will Smith and Overbrook Entertainment associate Charlie Mack Alston reached out to Hill. Hill began working with Smith on films such as I Am Legend, Hancock, then Marvel’s Iron Man.
In 2008 Hill directed Lady Gaga's The Fame short concert movie. In 2010, Hill returned to Philadelphia to start his own production company Philavision Pictures. After writing multiple original screenplays Hill direct a music based feature film entitled Streets starring hip hop artist Meek Mill also produced by Alston that was released nationally by the BET Network in 2012. As a result he landed a production deal with Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Entertainment to direct a slate of films, including Brotherly Love released by Freestyle Releasing and the LA based drama Deuces. Hill is currently writing, directing and producing original film and television content under the Philavision Entertainment banner.
