Ivan Vasiliev (born 9 January 1989)[1][2] is a Russian ballet dancer performing since 2012 as a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. He came to the ABT from the Mikhaylovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he had performed since December 2011.[3] Before that he was a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet.[4][5]
Born in Vladivostok, he graduated from the Belorussian Ballet School and won first prize at the Moscow International Ballet Competition in 2005. In 2006 he won the Grand Prix of the Varna International Ballet Competition and first prize at the Arabesque-96 Ballet Competition in Perm (where he also won the Korea Ballet Foundation Prize for Best Dancer).
Vasiliev joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 2006. Vasiliev was promoted to the rank of principal with fellow dancer and then-fiancee Natalia Osipova after a performance of Don Quixote, the ballet he premiered with, in May 2010. Vasiliev and Osipova left the Bolshoi in 2011 when they both moved to the Mikhailovsky Theater.[4]
His repertoire includes Basil (Don Quixote), the title role in Spartacus, Solor and the Golden Idol (La Bayadère), Conrad (Le Corsaire) Philippe (Flames of Paris), Acteon (La Esmeralda) and Misericordes.
He has won prizes including the Soul of Dance prize in Ballet Magazine's "Rising Star" nomination 2007 and the Prix Benois de la Danse prize in 2009. He was named one of "25 to Watch" by Dance Magazine in 2008 [2] and appeared in Kings of the Dance at New York City Center February 2012.
