The International Kim Il-sung Prize is an award conferred for contrubutions in the study and proliferation of the Juche idea.[1] The prize was instituted by Vishwanath, the former Director-General of the International Institute of the Juche Idea, on March 19, 1992. It is named in honor of Kim Il-sung, the first supreme leader of the North Korea, credited with creation of the Juche idea.

The International Kim Il-sung Prize consists of a medal, certificate, a sum of money and a souvenir token.[1][2]

The prize was instituted in April 1993 in New Delhi, on the occasion of the 81th birthday of Kim Il-sung.[1][3]

Rules of conferment

  1. The International Kim Il Sung Prize is conferred upon the distinguished activists and figures in political, social and academic circles and the Juche idea followers who have made special contributions to the global independence, peace, friendship and to the progress and prosperity of humanity.
  2. The International Kim Il Sung Prize is conferred according to the decision of the International Kim Il Sung Prize Council.
  3. The diploma, medal and trophy (precious metallic handicraft work) are awarded to the winner of the International Kim Il Sung Prize.

Prize Council

The International Kim Il-sung Prize Council selects and decides the candidate and organizes the conferment of the prize. The Council was officially registered in India and its headquarters is in New Delhi, India. The Council consists of one secretary-general and seven directors.[2]

The composition of the council is not made public,[1] but the following persons are known to have been members:

Sine 2007, the prize has been awarded by the International Kim Il-sung Foundation[5] (reorganized as the Kim Il-sung-Kim Jong-il Foundation in 2012).[6]

Recipients

In 2014, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni was nominated for the award, but repeatedly declined to receive it.[8]
