World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships

The competition

The World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships (formerly IFBB Mr. Universe) is a bodybuilding contest organised by the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB) and first held in 1959. The name was changed in 1976 to avoid confusion with the NABBA Mr. Universe.

Classes

From 1959-1969 there was just one category of competition - open. In 1970 the competition was split into three height classes: Short (under and including 5'5"), Medium (under and including 5'8"), and Tall (over 5'8") with an overall winner also decided. In 1976 they were abandoned in favour of weight classes. These have changed over the years but as of 2005 they are (weight in brackets is the maximum for this category):

An overall winner award was not awarded between 1976 and 1995. In 2006, overall winner awards were awarded in both the bodybuilding and classic bodybuilding disciplines.
