Higher Institute of Humanistic and Philosophical Studies (ISEHF) has been training Jesuits in preparation for the priesthood since 1978. Since 1997 it has offered to the public degrees in philosophy and education.[1] In 2015 it began offering the Master of Educational Administration and Management.
History
ISEHF is a teaching and research center[2] sponsored by Paraguay Province of the Society of Jesus. It grew out of the school of philosophy (CEPHSI) launched in 1978. A philosophy degree is granted through the Catholic University "Our Lady of the Assumption," and since 2000 the Ministry of Education and Culture has authorized ISEHF to grant the titles Professor of Philosophy, of Ethics, and of Citizenship Education. ISEHF is a member of AUSJAL (Association of Universities Entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America) and shares the goals and ideals of this organization.[3]
Academics
The degrees and other offerings include:
- Bachelor of Science in Education is a full-time, 4-year program with a concentration in popular education.[4]
- Bachelor or Arts in Philosophy requires three years of morning classes followed by two years of Saturday classes.[5]
- Pre-theological philosophy requires three years of morning classes, and prepares lay and religious to go on to the study of theology.[6]
- Master of Educational Administration and Management: this is been offered since 2015 in conjunction with Alberto Hurtado University in Chile, It is targeted at continual research and improvement in educational practice.[7]
- Teacher training: this is a 3-year program which runs on mornings, five days a week, and prepares those with university degrees to enter the teaching profession in the area of social sciences, ethics, anthropology, philosophy, sociology, history, and geography.[8]
- Specialization in University Teaching upgrades the educational background of those with a university degree who wish to teach at the university level. It requires 10 Saturday session over a 10-month period.[9] A more intense version of this would also meet on Fridays for the 10 months.[10]
- Diploma in Legal Reasoning is offered in conjunction with the Supreme Court. This assists lawyers to recognize the validity of arguments presented in court. Diploma in Penal Enforcement follows a study of the code. Diploma in Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents follows a study of this area.[11]
- Special courses in conflict mediation were announced in 2015.[12]
Library
St. Ignatius of Loyola Library contains 30,000 books and 20,000 journal articles.[13]
Collaboration
ISEHF has signed an agreement with Guyra Paraguay to educate for the preservation of biodiversity.[14]
ISEHF has also signed an agreement of cooperation with the education department of the University of Murcia.[15]
