Havant College is a large sixth form college located near the centre of Havant, in south-east Hampshire.
Admissions
Havant Sixth Form College currently has approximately 1100 full-time students, recruited from a 30-mile radius.
History
The current site was originally occupied by Havant Grammar School that moved here from Middle Park Way, Havant where it shared accommodation with the then Broomfield Secondary School (now Park Community School[1]). However, with the institution of the comprehensive school system, the Grammar School ceased to exist and became a sixth form college in 1974.
Havant Sixth Form College was last inspected in May 2011. At that inspection, overall effectiveness, outcomes for learners, leadership and management and capacity to improve were judged to be satisfactory. The quality of provision, including teaching and learning, was judged to be good. [2] In the Ofsted monitoring visit of January 2012, the College was judged to be making 'reasonable progress' in all aspects of its provision.
In March 2013, the College was reinspected and judged to be good with outstanding features. Teaching, learning and assessment were reported to be consistently at least good and with some outstanding practice, particularly in media.[3]
More recently, in June 2013, a £3 million school of business was added to the campus.
Facilities
The College had eight state-of-the-art science labs and approximately one PC to every student. There are two main social areas (the Refectory and the Terrace Bar) and the library offers study desks. Students may purchase food from the Refectory.[4] The college VLE website, which runs on the Open Source software "Moodle", contains academic resources and news.[5]
The Havant College Student Union[6] organises a number of social events for students including Battle of the Bands, Summer and Christmas Balls, and an annual Freshers Party.
School of Business
Havant Sixth Form College opened the William Archibald School of Business in July 2013. The new building will house the teaching of A Level Business Studies, Economics, Accounting and Law, providing state-of-the-art teaching facilities for the College’s top performing A Level subjects. The new facility has been dedicated to William Archibald, a long serving member of the College’s Corporation and former Managing Director at De La Rue, bank note producers, for his long standing service and commitment to the College. The building was officially opened by Andrew Ball, Corporate Communications Manager of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars who delivered an inspirational address expressing the importance of young people’s future in the business market.[7]
Sports
The college has extensive sports facilities, with its all-weather floodlit pitch being used for international hockey matches since the 1980s.
The College currently has 6/7 Sports Academies. Recent sporting successes for the College include the Rugby team winning the Hampshire Schools RFU Bowl Competition and the Hampshire 7's Bowl, the Boys Football team winning the South East Region Shield and the Girls Basketball team winning the South East Regional Plate.
