Governor Emilio Gaston Memorial Elementary School or GEGMES is one of the public schools in Silay City. It is located at Rizal Street next to the Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School.

History

Established in 1939, Governor Emilio Gaston Memorial Elementary School is one of the oldest educational institutions in Silay City, Negros Occidental. The campus has a land area of 7,772 square meters.

The school site was donated by the late Don Julio Ledesma, one of the most prominent families of Silay City. However the school was named after the late first Silaynon Governor in the person of Emilio Gaston.

In 1941-1943, during the Japanese Imperial Government's occupation of the Philippines, Governor Emilio Gaston Memorial Elementary School was the seat of its government and military garrison.

The campus population is a mixture of Brgy. Rizal, Brgy. Lantad, Brgy. I and II. A catchment area based pupils comprising the large majority and a considerable number of out of town pupils coming from the nearby town of E.B. Magalona and Talisay City. Roughly more than 95% of the school pupils belong to the low income bracket family category.

Emilio Gaston

Emilio Gaston was the mayor of Silay City from 1925-1930.[1] He was also the Governor of the Silay City from 1934-1937.[2] He was the most congress man in the history of Silay. He also declared the Paris of Negros was the Silay City because of many heritages houses and buildings around the city. He also made the reputation of Silay City as the leader of debating in the city. His real name is Emilio M. Gaston born on December 16, 1880 and died in June 13, 1937 where after the celebrating the Charter Day of Silay City.

Present

The school has now improved their needs like school repairing as well as planting trees and plants for their ecological projects like Gulayan sa Paaralan. There are also some parks that exactly the same as the subjects that they intake like Math Park and English Park. They have also the Greenhouse Room for the EPP or the Education for Planting. As 2014-2015, the principal is Merlinda D. Caro. The principal was the 2nd runner up for being Most Functional Principal[3] in the Public Elementary School at Silay City but in this 2015, the principal of the school is Mrs. Salvacion J. Senayo as from August 2015. She is also the last principal in Silay North Elementary School.
