Galerida is a genus of birds in the family Alaudidae. The current scientific name is derived from Latin. Galerida was the name for a lark with a crest, from galerum, "cap".[1] The name Galerida is synonymous with the earlier genus name Calendula.
Established by Friedrich Boie in 1828, the genus contains the following extant species:[2]
- Crested lark, Galerida cristata
- Maghreb lark, Galerida macrorhyncha
- Thekla lark, Galerida theklae
- Malabar lark, Galerida malabarica
- Sun lark, Galerida modesta
- Sykes's lark, Galerida deva
- Large-billed lark, Galerida magnirostris
Formerly, some authourities also considered the short-tailed lark as belonging to the genus Galerida (as G. fremantlii).
In addition, there are at least two fossil species which are included in this genus:
- Galerida bulgarica (late Pliocene of Varshets, Bulgaria)[3]
- Galerida pannonica (Pliocene of Csarnota, Hungary)[4]
