Frederick Irwin Anglican School (originally "Frederick Irwin Anglican Community School") is a private school located in Meadow Springs in Mandurah, Western Australia. It was founded in 1991 with 175 students, and currently has around 1,370 students from kindergarten to year 12. The school motto is "The Truth Will Set You Free."

History

The school is named after Frederick Chidley Irwin, the acting Governor of Western Australia from 1847 to 1848. Irwin was a practising Anglican, a key figure in the Pinjarra Massacre who also helped to establish the General Board of Education. Irwin was also responsible for bringing the first missionary to Western Australian shores.

Grounds

The school is architecturally divided into the primary and secondary, bisected by the entrance road and connected via an underpass and a gymnasium with a mezzanine, sometimes used as an art gallery.

The school library is surrounded by extensive green lawns. The Performing Arts Center is near Oakmont Avenue with two music rooms, a drama room, a stage (that can seat 180 people), two keyboard rooms and many small individual music rooms. There are six main blocks. The E block is English and Manual Arts, the B block is Science, the J/K block is for Social Studies, the G block is the Information Technology block, the D block is Maths and a small room adjoining the gym is the H block. Within each block (excluding the E and H blocks) is a set of lockers for each year group. There is also a set of lockers surrounding the "Central Quad" for year eight. The east side of the school supports a gym, three ovals and three basketball/netball/tennis courts.

House system

The school was previously divided into four houses, now six as of 2014:

All students in Primary and Secondary classes are placed in "House Groups", usually seven for each house, each year. All students in Secondary attend house period before officially starting lessons. On Wednesday, an extended house period is declared in which a sport will be played or an assembly will be held.

Each house has a house captain, vice captain and assistant.

Music department

Frederick Irwin Anglican School has a music program for its Students. All students in Year 8 take a compulsory Music course in which Instrumental Guitar is taught, and may be carried on in further years of Secondary Schooling. The school provides Year 11 and 12 students with the newly adopted non-TEE subject 'Contemporary Music' alongside the TEE course, 'Western Music'.

Music Scholarships by Audition and Interview are awarded to four students in the entering Year levels of 8 (lower secondary) and 11 (upper secondary).

House captains

Each house has a house captain and vice captain.

From 2013, the Year 5 classes and Year 4 nominate 2 house captains and 1 vice captain for each house, (Jamieson, Rose, Ellis, Gordon, Barret and Arnold.) Then in the following year, Year 6, they are introduced in an assembly. The same year, their duty as house officials comes into action.

The house officials assist the house teachers at sporting events including inter-school, swimming, cross country and athletic events.
