Franklin Central High School (FCHS), colloquially known as FC, is a public four-year high school in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It is the only high school under the responsibility of the Franklin Township Community School Corporation.
History
Franklin Central High School is named after Founding Father and polymath, Benjamin Franklin. Established in 1960, succeeding Franklin Township High School. The current school building was constructed during 1975 and 1976. Classes at the current building began in September 1976. The school underwent construction and renovation in 1990 and 2003. The Freshmen Academy, an addition to the main building, opened in the fall of 2009.
Demographics
In the 2010-11 school year, Franklin Central High School had 2,581 students enrolled. Enrollment consisted of 701 Freshman, 689 Sophomores, 620 Juniors and 571 Seniors. Enrollment by ethnicity consisted of 2,095 (81.2%) White students, 175 (4.8%) African American students, 125 (4.8%) Hispanic students, 102 (4.0%) Multiracial students, 76 (2.9%) Asian students, and 6 (0.2%) American Indian students.[1]
Academics
Franklin Central has full accreditation.[2] The school has a traditional schedule with seven 50-minute class periods per day, every week day, with 18-week semesters. The school year consists of 180 days. For eligibility and class ranking Franklin Central uses a 4.0 grade point average scale. Franklin Central has a wide curriculum. Courses are provided in Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Foreign Language, Industrial and Technical Arts, Language Arts, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Visual Art, and as internships and vocational programs. The school offers French, German, and Spanish as foreign languages. See the school curriculum here. Franklin Central competes annually in the Westfield Insurance Brain Game competition, hosted by WTHR Channel 13. Athletics
Franklin Central's school colors are blue and white and their athletic nickname is the Flashes. The de facto school mascot is named Captain Flash.
Franklin Central participates in sports under Indiana High School Athletic Association regulations and in IHSAA state rankings and tournaments. Franklin Central is a member of the Conference Indiana which is known as one of the most competitive conferences in Indiana.[3]
Most recently the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team was named the 2007 Marion County Champions.[4] Also, the Cross Country Team was named the 2006 IHSAA State Runner-Up.[5] Boys Swimming team has been Sectional Champions for the past 4 consecutive years.[6]
Franklin Central has sent a wrestler to the state tournament for 25 years straight. Recent wrestling stars include 3 time State Champion Jake O'Brien.
Franklin Central has had several state championship representatives in Track and Field including, Chris Norris - 300m Hurdles, Rory Norris - 2 Time 110m High Hurdles and 1 Time 300m Hurdle Champion,Aaron Fisher 1600m State Champion, Donald Washington - 2 Time Long Jump Champion and 1 Time State Runner-up. Chris Norris was also a United States Track and Field Team member winning 4 championship metals in Europe (100m, 200m, 4 × 100 m relay, 4 × 400 m relay, 2nd place 110m High Hurdles, 2nd 400m Hurdles, and 4th place in the Javelin). Rory Norris was a 2 Time NCAA Champion in the 110m High Hurdles and a 2 Time Olympic Qualifier in the 110m High Hurdles.[7]
Franklin Central High School is home to 12 boys' sports including Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, and Wrestling. Franklin Central also features 12 girls' sports including Basketball, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Soccer, Softball, Swimming and Diving, Tennis, Track and Field, and Volleyball.
Franklin Central's stadium, the Franklin Township Athletic Center, is a 13,120-square-foot (1,219 m2) multipurpose facility that is used for football and track and field. The stadium is six stories tall and has seating for 3,500 on the home side. The facility was built in 2004 at a one-time cost of $4.3 million.[8]

School media
- Flashback is the school's yearbook, which is complied by a yearbook staff during the school year and is distributed the following year.
- WRFT "Flash FM" the high school radio station, was recognized as the best high school radio station by the Indiana Association of Student Broadcasters in 2004, 2007,2010, and 2015.[10][11] The radio station operates 24 hours a day. The radio station frequency is 91.5 FM.
- The Pilot Flashes, founded in 1917, is the school's monthly student newspaper, The paper reports on news and sports, but also has feature and opinion articles on relevant issues. All students of Franklin Central receive a subscription to the newspaper. The Pilot Flashes has won numerous awards for articles and page design at High School Journalism Day (J-Day), hosted by Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Choral department
Franklin Central's choral department has won 6 state championships.

The department presents 6 concerts a year (Fall Concert, Sounds of the Season, Pops Night, Hoosier Show Choir Classic, Escapade and Spring Concert). These popular events have played to several sold-out audiences.
High Voltage and FC Singers
High Voltage is an all-girls advanced show choir. FC Singers is a mixed advanced show choir.
Accents and Varsity
Accents was an advanced choir of all girls but just recently became a small unisex show choir. Varsity is an all-girls intermediate choir.
Harmonia and Concordia
Harmonia and Concordia are the choirs that formed form beginning women's choir for freshmen, but because that choir got too big they split them up and renamed them Harmonia and Concordia.
Vocal Majority and Beginning Men
Vocal Majority is an all-men's intermediate choir. Beginning Men is an all-men's choir for freshmen.
Chamber Choir
Chamber is the most advanced choir at Franklin Central they do most of their performances A Capella.
Historical notes
Super Bowl performance
During the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show in Indianapolis, the Franklin Central drum line and three other local high schools performed with Madonna. Band members were required to sign contracts promising they would not speak of the performance until after the halftime show.[12]
