Biography

Feriyal Kadinefendi was born in France in 1845.She was born to a noble French family. She was captured during one of the raids and sold into slavery. In 1867,she was sent to Egypt with other slaves and entered as a concubine in the Harem of Isma'il Pasha. There, she was renamed Feriyal and later she converted to Islam. She was known for her beauty and elegant posture, since she was of noble origin.Isma'il Pasha married her in 1867 and one year later, she gave birth to the future King Fuad I.After Fuad's birth, she was elevated to the rank of second Kadinefendi, literally meaning second woman or second consort.Despite the fact that she was not one of Ismai'l's four legal wives, her rank was higher than them since concubines who rose to the title Kadinefendi were higher in rank than wives holding the title Hanimefendi, and all Isma'il's legal wives held the title of Hanimefendi. She was deeply loved by Isma'il,and he gave her a famous diamond crown.

Death

Feriyal Kadinefendi died in 1902,twenty years before her son Fuad I ascended the throne, thus not assuming the title Walida Pasha, which is equivalent to Queen mother.
