Esmoriz (Portuguese pronunciation: [(ɨ)ʒmuˈɾiʃ]) is a Portuguese city located 25 kilometers (16 mi) south of Porto. It belongs to Ovar Municipality. The population in 2011 was 11,448,[1] in an area of 9.17 km².[2] Esmoriz was given city status in 1993.
City division and lifestyle
The city is divided into 3 main sectors, the urban sector, the beach and the forest, however the city is composed mainly by urban elements. The urban sector is home to mostly mid to upper-mid class people, and the most regular house types are Apartments, usually 3 stories high. Small businesses are common, like the Marijol markets which are located in several locations all over the city, but it also has got large commercial infrastructures like Pingo Doce, Minipreço and Intermarché. Several bookstores and informatic material shops are available, with the occasional barber shop and fashion parlor available. Despite the urbanized theme that characterizes it, several green spaces are spread throughout the city. The forest sector is hardly inhabited and mostly constituted by pine trees. The beach sector of Esmoriz is a common touristic go-to place in Portugal, and in a certain area also harbours the most luxurious houses in the city.
Education
Esmoriz has both a 2nd and 3rd cycle School (Portuguese 5th to 9th grade) and a Secondary School. The later was founded on 1 April 1975. The school functioned for 13 years at the Solar da Rua dos Castanheiros and was inaugurated at a new location in 1988, Rua Da Estrada Nova n° 3885. The school has 6 buildings, 4 of which are class dedicated and have about 20 classrooms each, except the first one which is dedicated to administrative functions. The gymnastics building is large, and is well equipped with PE materials. The 6th building contains the School's canteen and cafeteria.
Sports in Esmoriz
The S.C. Esmoriz[3] football club is the official football team of the city, playing in the Estádio da Barrinha, which has a capacity for 2500 people. The backbone of the team are the teenage players which comprise the majority of it. It also has a volleyball team, Esmoriz Ginásio Clube, usually sponsored by local companies and being housed in the local gym. This same gym provides a wide range of physical activities, from martial arts to the aforementioned sport.
Transport
The city is served by major roads to other nearby cities: Ovar, Espinho, Feira, São João da Madeira, Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Aveiro. It also has a train station (Linha do Norte: Porto, Gaia, Espinho, Ovar, Estarreja, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisboa).
