Equity Residential is a publicly traded real estate investment trust based in Chicago, Illinois.

As of January 31, 2016, the company owned or had investments in 316 properties consisting of 85,391 apartments located primarily in Boston, New York City, Washington DC, Seattle, San Francisco, and Southern California.[1]

The company was added to the S&P 500 in 2001.[3] The company has paid a dividend to its common stock shareholders in every year since 1993.[4]

History

The company was founded in 1969 by real-estate investor Sam Zell, who is also the current chairman.[5]

On February 27, 2013, Equity Residential and Avalon Bay closed a $9 billion deal to acquire Archstone from Lehman Brothers.[6]
