DatPiff is an online mixtape distribution platform owned by Idle Media Inc. It was launched in 2005 and is headquartered in Pennsylvania.[1] It specializes in hip-hop, rap, and urban music.
They have also received major sponsorship deals from companies such as Nike and VH1.[3]
Features
A key feature of DatPiff is that unregistered users are allowed to download for free any mixtape uploaded to the site that has been Sponsored - i.e. funded by the artist or label. Registered users are permitted a limited number of downloads of non-sponsored mixtapes per day. Premium paid users have an unlimited number of downloads of any mixtape. Mixtapes may be streamed by any user. Premium content may also be purchased.
Users register as an artist or fan - the key difference being that artists upload their work to the site while fans may only listen to these works.
DatPiff has mobile applications for iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry, and WebOS.
Press coverage and recognition
Forbes Magazine covered DatPiff in 2011 in the article "Datpiff: How Love For Mixtapes Grew To Lil Wayne Levels", remarking on its rapid growth and featuring of major artists. It describes the site as "the envy of anyone trying to build an online entertainment community".[4]
