Population

Official data from the Embassy of China states there are 5,000 Chinese in the Congo.[1] However, Congolese academic Edwige Kamitewoko estimates the number of Chinese to range between 15,000-25,000.[1] In a Marien Ngouabi University survey of 227 Chinese migrants, 44% of the respondents were from Zhejiang, particularly Qingtian County and Wenzhou.[1]

Business

Many Chinese migrants arrived with the aim of starting a businesses, opening shops, restaurants, hotels, photo labs, pharmacies, and hospitals.[1] The retail shops run by Chinese nationals are engaged in all manner of goods including furniture, cosmetics, clothing, computer and electronic products and even baked goods.[1]

Several Chinese engineering firms work in Congo as contractors for major infrastructure projects and employ Chinese construction workers as a part of the overall workforce. At a Beijing Construction Engineering Group construction site in March 2012 in Brazzaville, 6 Chinese workers were killed and dozens injured when a blast occurred after a fire at a munitions depot devastated the adjacent neighborhood.[2]
