Charlton School

Charlton School is an 11-16 comprehensive school in Telford, Shropshire, England. It is consistently among the best performing comprehensive schools in the Telford & Wrekin Local Education Authority. The aim of Charlton School is to provide an environment in which all students can succeed.

It is well established in its local community with a consistent record of high standards. This is attributable to excellent examination results and acknowledges its caring and disciplined environment, combining formality with good relationships between adults and students. Although, during May 2015 the school was placed in special measures being graded by "Inadequate" by ofsted inspectors. This is the fifth school in the Telford & Wrekin Council area to be placed in ofsted special measures.

Charlton School works in partnership with Dothill Primary School, forming the 'Dothill and Charlton Sports and Learning Community'. Both schools until July 2015 were under the Principalship of Mr N Renshaw (now resigned) with each school supported by a Head of Secondary and Head of Primary Phase. However, as of September 2015 both schools have their own leadership with Mr L Tristham being appointed head at Charlton and Mrs D Cawte and Mrs T Lockley (Acting) taking lead at Dothill. The Learning Community's aim is to ensure that Charlton School works closely with all partner primary schools to ensure the very best provision and continuity of learning for all.

From June 2016 a new principal Mr.A.McNaughton was employed with Mr.L.Tristham taking the role of senior deputy teacher. The learning community continues with Dothill primary school with the leadership at dothill being fulfilled by Mrs.R.Butler.

The head is also supported by a senior leadership team consisting of two deputy head teachers: Mrs T Corbett (teaching & learning) and Mr W Denfhy (pastoral). Also, Mrs S Serrelcooke as assistant head - whole school assesment and reporting).Curriculum leaders are responsible for the running and achievement of the subject areas and include: Mr A Briggs (Humanities), Mr A Morris (Technology), Mrs H Hibbert (English), Mr M Thomas (Physical Education), Miss A Vickers (Expressive Arts), Mrs A Stephens (Information Technology), Mrs C Kainth (Mathematics), Mrs D Walker (Inclusion And Achievement), Mrs E Upton (Mordern Foreign Languages) and Mr I Newcombe (Science).

The school is now operating on new purposes built site located on the vacated Blessed Robert Johnson school site in Wellington from May 2016.

Student Support

Charlton School aims to meet the needs of all students. Opportunities are provided for those who are either gifted and talented in particular areas, or students who have specific learning needs. Their team of specialist teachers offer special needs provision, integrating students who have special needs and providing small group support where necessary.

Curriculum

A broad and rich curriculum is covered by all students in years 7 and 8, offering much more than the requirements of the National Curriculum. In year 8 students are supported in making choices about their curriculum from year 9 onwards. The curriculum is further enhanced by extension study courses and a pastoral programme including Religious Education. Work experience, college taster days and placements support students in their future career decisions.

Background

Founded in 1962 as Wellington Girls' Modern School, the school was originally an all-girls school. In 1974 it became co-educational and was renamed The Charlton School.^[1]

The school's catchment area includes the small towns surrounding it like Wellington and Bratton. In 2003 a sports hall was built and in the following year the school was officially opened as a Science College. The College's unity never terminated over the years, with pride being focused upon career, keeping the reputation of the school up in the community.

School Houses

Charlton School students used to be divided into 4 houses, each named after a notable person born within Shropshire. Each house had a designated color to compete each year in inter-house sporting competitions. During 2015 these houses changed so there are now 5 and they are named after trees which symbolize growth. These changes were made to make the house system more effective.
