Chaerul Umam (born April 4, 1943 – October 3, 2013) was an Indonesian director who received many awards, both in Indonesia and international. On October 3, 2013, Umam had died at the Pondok Kopi Hospital in Jakarta, due to stroke disease.[1][2]

Career

Umam has began his debut career for joining in several theater on 1960s to 70s. After that, Umam decided moved to Jakarta in 1970 for joining a small theater which is led by senior director Arifin C. Noer. Umam began his career as director when directing the debut film, titled Tiga Sekawan (1975). At the 1973 Asian Film Festival, Umam has winning his first international special awards in Muangthai, Thailand.

His work film director have often listed a nominations for Best Director and only winning in 1992 for Ramadhan dan Ramona at Indonesian Film Festival. In addition as film director, Umam also producing his work soap opera television; totally about religious genre, including Ketika Cinta Bertasbih of Ramadhan edition and Dalam Mihrab Cinta.
