Cameron Carter-Vickers (born 31 December 1997) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Tottenham Hotspur.

Born in England, he represents the United States at youth international level.

Club career

Carter-Vickers joined the academy system at Tottenham Hotspur at the age of eleven having caught the eyes of scouts as a ten-year-old.[2]

Under manager Mauricio Pochettino, Cameron Carter-Vickers made his first matchday squad against Ligue 1 team AS Monaco in the Europa League.[3][4]

Carter-Vickers featured in the 2016 International Champions Cup held in Melbourne and made 2 starts against Juventus and Atletico Madrid and was given the jersey number 38 for the season.[5] On 21 September, Carter-Vickers made his first team debut for the club in the third round of the Football League Cup against Gillingham in which Spurs won 5–0.[6]

International career

In the summer of 2014 Carter-Vickers was playing for Tottenham’s academy side at the IMG Cup in Bradenton, Florida where they beat the US U17 team 5–3. During the game he caught the eye of US coaches who had learned of his possible eligibility for a US passport.[2][7] Carter-Vickers remains eligible for England, but has not received a call up at any level from his native country.[7]

Carter-Vickers represented the US for the first time at U18 level in August 2014 and by October 2014 was a member of the US U23 team.[8] He represented the United States U-20 National Team at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and started several games despite being only 17 at the time. The team were knocked out by Serbia in the quarter finals.[9][10]

In September 2016, it was reported that the English FA had made inquiries about Carter-Vickers and that the USA were prepared to fast track the player into their senior set up.[11][12] On 10 October 2016, Carter-Vickers captained USA U20 in a 2–0 loss against his native England.[13] On 6 November 2016, Carter-Vickers received his first call up to the senior US squad.[14]

Personal life

Carter-Vickers is the son of former basketball player Howard Carter.[15] He grew up in Southend, England, with his mother.[2] His secondary school is The Eastwood Academy, which is known for its current high exam results and a sporting representation, with many students going into sporting careers.
