CBS Telenoticias (written as CBS Telenotícias in Brazil, formerly known simply as Telenoticias) was a subscription news television channel operated by CBS, headquartered in Miami.[1] It was the first news channel to broadcast its programming in Spanish and Portuguese languages to Latin America.[1]

History

The channel was created in 1994 through a joint venture between Reuters, Artear (Grupo Clarín), Antena 3 and Telemundo, known only as Telenoticias.[1][2] CBS acquired control of the channel in March 27, 1996, deciding to expand the signal of the channel throughout Latin America, in addition to creating a signal in Portuguese language for Brazil.[1][2]

The Portuguese language version debuted in October 1997 in the DirecTV Brasil line-up.[3] Initially, it had about 12 hours of programming in Portuguese, the rest of the program was covered by CBS news programs.[4] With the creation of the Portuguese language version of the channel, the cable operators NET and Multicanal, at the time owned by Grupo Globo, decided to remove the channel from their programming to avoid competition with GloboNews.[1][5][6]

From December 15, Jornal do SBT happens to be produced by the channel, due to a partnership with SBT.[7] The Brazilian network also offered its news content to CBS, which in turn offered their content back.[7] Eliakim Araújo and Leila Cordeiro hosted the news program from Miami, while Hermano Henning hosted the program from SBT studios, located in Osasco.[7][8] The channel had a similar agreement with U.S. network Telemundo, where its main newscast, Noticiero Telemundo, was also produced by Telenoticias.[9]

TVA (currently Vivo TV) has included the channel in their line-up from February 1 in their basic package.[3][4]

In March 1998, SBT started to broadcast five hours of programming from CBS Telenoticias through the night, known as SINAL (Sistema de Notícias da América Latina; Latin American News System in English).[8] The Telenoticias also closed partner to display content produced by Bandeirantes and TV Cultura, but they could not be shown on SBT.[10][11]

In 2000, Telemundo, at the time owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media, bought the channel.[9][12] The Portuguese language division was dissolved due an agreement between Telemundo and Rede Globo to broadcast its telenovelas and the Spanish language division has been replaced by the international version of Telemundo.[13][14]
