William M. Coughlan (1899 – July 5, 1952)[1] was an athlete, coach and official. He played football and track for the Sewanee Tigers,[2] inducted into the school's sports hall of fame in 2005.[3] Coughlan was a running back on the football team, captain of the 1920 team.[4] He returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown against Alabama in 1922.[5] He was second-team on the all-time Sewanee football team.[6] Coughlan coached track at the University of Chattanooga in 1930,[7] and later coached at Notre Dame prep.
