The second season of Bates Motel consisted of 10 episodes and premiered on A&E on March 3, 2014. The season aired on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on A&E, and concluded on May 5, 2014.[1] The series itself is described as a "contemporary prequel" to the 1960 film Psycho and follows the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma in the fictional town of White Pine Bay, Oregon prior to the events portrayed in the Hitchcock film.[2]

The season received positive reviews from television critics,[3] and the premiere episode drew in a total of 3.07 million viewers.[4] Bates Motel was renewed for a third season after five episodes of the second season had aired.[5] For her performance as Norma Louise Bates, Vera Farmiga received nominations for the 2014 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series and the 2014 Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television.[6] The season was released on Blu-ray and DVD on October 7, 2014.[7]

Plot

Four months after the events of the first season, the Bates Motel has become a hot spot for vacationers, though plans for a new bypass could affect its success. Norma Louise Bates (Vera Farmiga) is worried about her son Norman (Freddie Highmore), who is practicing taxidermy and obsessing over Miss Watson's (Keegan Connor Tracy) unsolved murder. During a visit to her grave, Norman sees an older man there and assumes he could be the killer. When he tells Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell), the sheriff takes the opportunity to ask Norman about his whereabouts on the night of her death.

Dylan (Max Thieriot) learns that Miss Watson was Bradley's father's mistress, and that her boyfriend Gil likely killed him after discovering their affair. Dylan tells Bradley (Nicola Peltz), who murders Gil and turns to Norman for help. Norman hides her in his basement, before she skips town. Romero meets with the man at the graveyard, Nick Ford (Michael O'Neill), who is Miss Watson's father and the head of the town's powerful drug family. Ford assures Romero that he had nothing to do with Gil's murder. Zane Morgan (Michael Eklund), Dylan's new boss, suspects an opposing drug family killed Gil.

A stoner is arrested after his semen is found inside Miss Watson, but another unidentified semen sample is also discovered. To bond with Norman, Norma signs them up for community theater, where Norman makes a new girlfriend, Cody Brennan (Paloma Kwiatkowski). Norma's brother, Caleb (Kenny Johnson), arrives at the motel, but Norma immediately throws him out. He bonds with Dylan, telling him he helped protect Norma from their abusive father when they were younger. Dylan defends Caleb to Norma, but she claims he raped her for years. Their argument comes to a head when Norman and Dylan start fighting. Norma intervenes by saying Dylan is Caleb's son. The revelation deeply affects Dylan.

Norman's hallucination of Norma's rape leads him to Caleb's motel room. His fractured psyche causes him to lash out at Caleb in Norma's persona. Cody picks up Norman, who comes out of his trance but doesn't remember anything. Norman admits his blackouts to Cody. She takes Norman to her secret tree house, where the two have sex. Meanwhile, Romero stays at the motel after Zane has his house burned down. Romero cautions Norma about Ford, who she hopes will help stop the bypass initiative with the city council. Later, Norma learns that one of the city council members has died in a mysterious auto accident. Dylan protects Zane from a shooting and is hospitalized. He meets Zane's sister, Jodi (Kathleen Robertson), who takes him to her house so he can recover from his injuries.

Norman, Cody, and Emma (Olivia Cooke) go to the river, where Emma nearly drowns due to exposure to the cold water. Norman has another fit while with Cody. This news gets back to Norma who, just when Norman is about to take his drivers test, tells the instructor about his blackouts. Angry at Cody, Norman confronts her about betraying his trust. Their heated discussion wakes her abusive father. As Norman scuffles with him, Norman accidentally pushes him down a flight of stairs, killing him. Norman is questioned about the death, and his DNA is taken for processing. Cody leaves to live with her aunt.

After Cody's father's death is ruled an accident, Norman is released. Romero is told that Norman's DNA matches the semen found in Miss Watson's body. Norman becomes distant with Norma. Dylan meets with Ford, who asks him to kill Zane or the Bates family will be in danger. Norman confronts Norma about their altered relationship, and Norma leaves. Alone, Norman is abducted by an intruder; Ford's henchmen keep him in a hot box, where his sanity begins to slip. He recalls the blackout he had at Miss Watson's house: he sliced Miss Watson's throat while having sex with her. Ford orders Dylan to kill Zane or Norman dies. Unable to do so, Dylan reports to Ford, but inadvertently kills him before he can learn Norman's whereabouts.

Romero informs Norma that her son had sex with Miss Watson, and Norma tells him that Ford has kidnapped Norman. Romero convinces one of Ford's henchmen to reveal Norman's location, and Romero and Dylan rescue him. In the aftermath, Jodi invites her brother to her house to talk business. The siblings argue, and Zane kills her. Romero then shoots Zane dead. Norman informs Norma of his "dream" of killing Miss Watson, who tells him to not tell anyone. Back home, Norman takes a gun from his mother's drawer. Norma finds him in the woods and is able to talk him out of suicide. Wanting to flee the country with her sons, Norma ultimately allows Norman to take a polygraph test insisted by Romero. When Norman is asked if he killed Blair Watson, he envisions his mother and answers "no". With a smile to himself, Norman passes the polygraph.

Norman takes a gun and bullets from his mother's drawer. In the aftermath of Nick Ford's death, Jodi – convinced by Romero – invites her brother Zane to her house to talk about the future of their business. They have an argument, and Zane kills her.
