BET: Uncut

BET: Uncut was a television program that aired on BET from 2001 until 2006. The music video program contained mature content, including highly sexualized imagery. Because of its content, the show was rated TV-MA and accompanied by an on-air message stating that it is not suitable for children under the age of 17. The show aired on Wednesdays through Fridays at 3 a.m. EST. Though some of the videos were from well-known hip hop artists, most were from lesser-known artists, and the production value of the lesser known videos were often quite poor.

Its last episode aired on July 8, 2006 and was hosted by Jermaine Dupri. BET announced the cancellation of the show on July 25, 2006.[1]

Controversy

While the videos were lightly censored, the show's content has been the focus of controversy. For example, the Associated Press has reported that even some hip-hop artists such as Big Boi of Outkast thought the show was distasteful and could constitute soft porn.[2] Likewise, individuals affiliated with historically black institutions such as Spelman College and Essence Magazine have publicly stated that the erotic imagery of the show falls outside of acceptable standards.[3] Regardless, the show maintained a degree of popularity.

Revival Prank

On August 5, 2015, BET announced that Uncut would return, with the first new episode airing the following Tuesday, August 11, at 11:00 PM EDT.[4]

However, when that time came, after a brief teaser intro, BET instead announced that the whole thing was the first prank leading up to the revival of Punk'd the next week, once again reaffirming that Uncut is gone for good.[5]
