Arrowe Park Hospital (APH) is a large, acute hospital, located on a 15-acre (6.1 ha) section of Arrowe Park, close to the village of Upton, Wirral, Merseyside. It is one of three hospitals managed by Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust,[1] the others being Clatterbridge Hospital and Wirral Women and Children's Hospital which is based on the Arrowe Park site.
The hospital was officially opened in 1982 by Queen Elizabeth II. The maternity and gynaecology wing was later opened by, and dedicated to, the Duchess of Westminster.
History
Whilst building didn't start until the late 1970s, planning for Arrowe Park Hospital began in the 1960s.[2]
Although built as a replacement for St Catherine's Hospital and Birkenhead General Hospital in Birkenhead, Leasowe Hospital, and Victoria Central Hospital and Highfield Maternity Hospital, both in Wallasey; Arrowe Park Hospital duplicated services also offered by Clatterbridge Hospital.
In March 2011, following remodelling work at a cost of £11.5m, the maternity and gynaecology unit was renamed Wirral Women and Children's Hospital.[3][4]
