Angel on the Curb (2003) (Shantytown Blues, Russian: Ангел на обочине) is an avantguard musical drama, close in style to Sergey Solovyov's Assa. "He wanted to become a thief, but became a rock star", reads the tagline.
The film was presented at the XXVI Moscow International Film Festival, 2004.
In 2004 15-year-old Vasya Lykshin was awarded "Children's Oscar" for the leading part in this film.
Plot
A young boy Misha lives in a small town: sleeps in a shack, listens to The Beatles and hijacks a motorcycle. Nobody knows that melodies dwell in his head. Only a local criminal boss nicknamed John understands that Misha is born for music. However, soon John is killed. Then political turmoil happens in the country. Misha with his music finds himself in the middle of this turbulent whirlpool. And John's killer is behind his back.
The actor who played the young hero was found in juvenile prison. He agreed to participate on the condition that filming time counts towards his term. His story is pretty close to the one of the hero.
