Andy Sandberg

Andy Sandberg is an American director, writer, actor, and Tony Award winning producer. A 2006 graduate of Yale College, he is best known as a producer of the Broadway (2009) and West End (2010) revivals of the musical Hair.

Early years

Sandberg began acting in school productions as a child.^[1] He graduated from the Browning School in 2001 and Yale College in 2005 with a B.A. in English (Writing Concentration) and Theater Studies. While at Yale, Sandberg performed with and served as the business manager for the Whiffenpoofs^[2] and the Yale Alley Cats.^[3] At Yale, he performed in and/or directed over 30 productions including Side Show, Parade, The Laramie Project, Songs for a New World, The Last Five Years and The Goat or Who is Sylvia?

Actor and director

As an actor, Sandberg appeared as Jimmy opposite Lea Michele in the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) production of Hot and Sweet.^[4] Other roles have included Huck in Big River and Sam in Fully Committed. He also appeared in the film The Battle of Pussy Willow Creek.

Sandberg directed Bernice Bobs Her Mullet in 2007 (NYMF),^[5] R.R.R.E.D. in 2009 (NYMF)^[6] and "Eli’s Comin’ to Broadway," a BC/EFA benefit hosted by Nathan Lane (Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center), as well as two Sing for Hope benefits, featuring Dick Cavett, Michael Cerveris and Richard Kind.^[7] He has also directed workshops and readings of such works as Garbo & Me, by Joanne Lessner and Joshua Rosenblum (2009).^[8] In 2007, Sandberg assisted Hal Prince on the Broadway production of LoveMusik (SDC Fellowship),^[3] and he served as the Associate Director to Sheryl Kaller on Christopher Durang and Peter Melnick’s Adrift in Macao at Primary Stages.^[9]

Producer

Sandberg was one of the producers of the Broadway and West End revival of Hair (2009),^[9] which won Tony and Drama Desk awards, among others.^[10] In the fall of 2009, Sandberg partnered with Daryl Roth to produce the New York premiere of Vigil, starring Malcolm Gets and Helen Stenborg.^[11] In the spring of 2010, Sandberg was one of the lead producers of Paradise Found, a new musical co-directed by Hal Prince and Susan Stroman, produced at London's Menier Chocolate Factory and starring Mandy Patinkin.^[12] Off-Broadway, he was a producer of Love, Loss, and What I Wore, by Nora and Delia Ephron (2010),^[1] and A Perfect Future, a new play by David Hay (2011).^[13] He also produced a reading of Operation Epsilon, a new play by Alan Brody.^[14]

Andy is currently represented on Broadway as a producer of the Tony-nominated revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, starring James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Candice Bergen, Eric McCormack, and John Larroquette.^[15]

Andy will both direct and produce the new musical The Last Smoker in America, which will begin performances on July 11, 2012 at the Westside Theatre in New York.^[16]

In 2010, he produced and directed a Columbus, Ohio production of The Last Smoker in America, a new musical by Bill Russell and Peter Melnick,^[17] which will open in New York in the Summer of 2012.^[7]

Sandberg sits on the Alumni Board of the Yale Dramatic Association, and the Whiffenpoof and Yale Alley Cats Alumni Associations.^[18]
