Aleksandrit class minesweeper (Project 12700) is a new Russian minesweeper class being constructed for the Russian navy. The first ship was laid down on September 22, 2011 and was launched in June 2014. A total of 4 ships are planned to be constructed. The ship's hull is made of monolithic fiberglass and shaped by vacuum infusion which gives it advantage in minesweeping. According to the shipyard's representatives the first ship's hull was shaped within 1.5 days, making it a world record.[2]
On June 7 2016 a fire started on the second ship under construction, the Georgiy Kurbatov. Accourding the shipyard officials the fire would not delay the construction time, however the launch date was later presponed.[3]
Export
India has shown intrest in the new minesweeper and has been in talks about starting producing the class under licence. India need about 10 ships. In September 2016 the talks was suspended as the country is waiting to obtain the results of the operational evaluation of the first same-type ship in Russia.[4]
