Al Muntazir Schools, named after the Shia Twelfth Imam, is a collection of non-government schools, providing excellent education from pre-school to A-levels, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was founded and is run by the Shia Ithna'sheri Jamaat, Central Board of Education (CBE). The Al Muntazir Schools consist of the following schools:
- Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary
- Al Muntazir Boys Primary School
- Al Muntazir Girls Primary School
- Al Muntazir Union Nursery School
- Al Muntazir Toddlers & Day Care Centre[1]
Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary
Established in 1986, the school is home to approximately 780 students and 60 teaching faculty, and offers both the Cambridge International Curriculum (IGCSE) and the NECTA National curriculum. Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary aims to inculcate lifelong passion for learning amongst the students and to mold them into self-directed learners. To facilitate this, the school ensures the provision of resourceful libraries, where students are motivated to read research and investigate. The school strongly believes that learning for each student should be challenging, interesting and achievable. Hence, the school works on strong ethos based on values and spirituality. The school works towards developing students who would exhibit:
- Achievement in academics
- Ethics and Morals
- Community Service
- Spirituality
- Participation in Sports
- High level of discipline.
To support the ethos, the school provides continuous professional development to its teachers in order to gear them towards a supporting role for the students and for themselves to succeed. The support is also extended to the students through the school’s counseling office whereby students are given relevant guidance in areas of careers, personal growth and academic achievement.[2]
Curriculum
Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary is authorized by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE – UK) to offer the IGCSE program for ages 13 – 16 as well as the GCE A Levels for ages 16 – 18. At the same time, the school is authorized to provide the local curriculum by the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) to offer the A level program for ages 16 – 18.
The IGCSE program allows students to undergo a four-year study before sitting for the international examinations. It is taken in core and extended levels through five subject groups: Languages (English as 1st Language and Kiswahili), Humanities (Economics and Geography), Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Mathematics and Vocational (Business Studies and Accounting). At the same time, for the preparation of a holistic professional, additional subjects are provided including Information Technology, Physical Education and Religious Studies.[3]
At the A level, the school provides both the international curriculum through Cambridge and the local curriculum through NECTA. The following combinations are provided:
- Physics, Chemistry and Advance Math (PCM)
- Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB)
- Physics, Geography and Advance Math (PGM)
- Economics, Geography and Advance Math (EGM)
- Economics, Business Studies and Accounting (EBA)
At the same time, additional electives provided include General Paper, Pure Math and Religious Studies. The 2 year NECTA A level program is authorized by the local Ministry of Education and examined by the National Examination Council of Tanzania.[4] At Al Muntazir Islamic Seminary, the subject combinations provided at the A levels include:

- Physics, Geography and Advance Math (PGM)
- Economics, Geography and Advance Math (EGM)
- Economics, Commerce and Accounting (ECA)

- History, Geography and Other Languages (HGL)

- Model United Nations(MUN)-Led By Rahmat Rashid of Form 4 Science
Sporting activities available are; Basketball(Led by the ever loyal captain, Salman Kazim Nasser of Form 5 science), Football, Cricket(Led again by Salman Kazim Nasser(plays for the Tanzanian Cricket Association(TCA))), Volleyball, Swimming and Recreational Sports.
Facilities
School Library: A well stocked library that houses numerous reading materials including Academic Textbooks for every subject taught at the school, Non Fiction and Fiction readers, Periodicals, Newspapers and Encyclopedias. Together with that, IT facilities within the library allow students to conduct online research that can assist them in their research projects.[5]
Science Laboratories: A total of six science labs are available for students and teachers for conducting lab sessions as part of the learning process. The laboratories are modern and contain state of the art equipment to make the learning process more effective.
IT Laboratories: Two well stocked IT Labs are available not only for students to learn the practical IT modules, but also for teachers wanting to demonstrate online or CD based learning materials to students in any subject. One of the IT labs is also improvised as an AV room allowing all Al Muntazir Schools to hold presentations or demonstrations using multimedia facilities.
Sports Ground The School has access to the Union Sports Club Sports ground for any sporting activity including Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Athletics and Basketball.
Al Muntazir Boys Primary School
The Al Muntazir Boys Primary School formerly known as Al Muntazir Junior School is situated in the posh Sea View area opposite the Aga Khan Hospital, the school faces the Indian Ocean and enjoys a tranquil environment of the area, which is very conducive for the teaching and learning process. The Al Muntazir Boys Primary School currently follows the Tanzania National Curriculum. The Al Muntazir Boys Primary always endeavors to keep improving the academic standards of the pupils. The continuous staff development programs enhance these objectives and make the future of the school brighter.[6]

Al Muntazir Girls Primary School
Al Muntazir Girls Primary School is situated on the United Nations Road, very close to the Indian Ocean. The Al Muntazir Girls Primary Campus was established in the year 2002, branching out from the Al Muntazir Junior School. It has evolved over the years and is today led by a highly qualified and dedicated team of management and teachers. The campus is built up as a two floored open rectangle. This consists of offices and spacious classrooms, as well as extra facilities such as an art room, an inviting library, a modernized computer room, a moral science room, a resource room and a sick bay where children are taken care by the school nurse.[7]

Al Muntazir Union Nursery School
The Al Muntazir Union Nursery School is one of the biggest pre-schools in Dar es Salaam. Established in 1956 with just 2 classes, the school now provides education to almost 740 students aged between 2 ½ and 6 years.[8] The curriculum set is broad and balanced thus providing children with opportunities through play and other experiences to develop the learning associated with:

- Early Mathematical Experiences
- Early Experiences in Science and Technology
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical development
- Creativity
- Knowledge and Appreciation of the Environment
Al Muntazir Toddlers & Day Care Centre
The Toddlers wing is a happy and loving environment that provides quality care to young toddlers. The goals are to enrich a healthy foundation for a lifelong learning in children by supporting the development of the whole child through activities which promote physical, social, emotional and cognitive development in a play-based environment. Classrooms are designed to be child-centered, attractive and interesting. Learning centers are set up in the classrooms so that small groups and individual children can explore different materials related to the study of math, science, art, and language while teachers observe and interact with the children and the materials to provide opportunities to balance both shared and independent learning experiences.[9]
