Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center
The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center is a center of the United States Air Force which aims to centralize the delivery of installation support capabilities.
The center (provisional) was activated Aug. 8 and is aligned under Air Force Materiel Command. Joint Base Andrews, Md., will serve as the temporary headquarters for AFIMSC(P). It will remain the home of AFIMSC until Air Force officials select a base for the permanent center, using the standard Strategic Basing Process.[1]
1/21/2015 - Washington (AFNS) -- Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, was selected as the host base for the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Headquarters.[2]
Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter is the center's provisional commander. General Carter previously served as the special assistant to the commander of AFMC, developing the strategy and implementation plan for AFIMSC.
AFIMSC will consolidate a variety of installation and mission support functions currently performed at 10 major commands across the Air Force. It will also be the parent organization for several existing field operating agencies including the Air Force Security Forces Center, Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Air Force Installation Contracting Agency, the Services Directorate of the Air Force Personnel Center and other FOAs providing installation support capabilities.
In 2013, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel directed service secretaries and chiefs to find efficiencies across their headquarters organizations that will save 20 percent in total operating budgets. Then-Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley and Chief of Staff of the Air Force Mark A. Welsh III challenged their staffs to identify options to reduce overhead costs, increase efficiencies, eliminate redundant activities, and improve effectiveness and business processes to help meet the 20 percent reduction target.
