History

The Miss Tourism International world final is a New Year’s Eve pageant that plays host to many international beauty queens from around the world. The 2011 contest had contestants from 60 countries.[4]

The inauguration of Miss Tourism Queen International was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2002. Introduced by the president and franchise owner, Tan Sri Datuk Danny Ooi, today, Miss Tourism International contest has involved contestants in over 60+ countries.[5] In 2002, the pageant had 40 participants from various countries.[1] Also in 2002, the first live internet broadcast of the event occurred.[1]

Cultural exchange

The 2002 pageant was ascribed the theme "Bringing the World to Malaysia".[1] It has been described as conducive to encouraging cultural exchange in Malaysia per participants in the pageant being from various countries.[1] At past pageants, such as the 2002 one, contestants have been given tours of Malaysian areas of interest, are introduced to various food delicacies, and are encouraged to engage in cultural exchange by discussing their native countries to "promote understanding and goodwill".[1] The event is televised in Malaysia and "broadcast to participating countries".[1] In 2002, the pageant was supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism, and part of its focus is to serve to promote tourism in Malaysia.[1]
