This is a summary of the year 2015 in British music charts.
The UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart are two of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) that calculates the best-selling singles and albums of the week in the United Kingdom.[1] Since 2004, the charts have been based on the sales of both physical singles and albums and digital downloads. Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming. From 1 March (week ending 7 March), audio streaming became incorporated into the albums chart. A total of 24 singles and 39 albums have claimed the top spot in 2015.
From Friday 10 July, the chart week changed from Sunday–Saturday to Friday–Thursday, with the first chart covering Sunday 5 July to Thursday 9 July. This chart move is to align the chart week with the new Global Release Day (Friday) for music.[2][3]
Number one artists
In the singles chart, Mark Ronson returned to the top of the charts for a further 6 weeks, having reached number 1 in 2014 with "Uptown Funk", taking its total to 7 weeks, the longest run since Leona Lewis — "Bleeding Love" from 2007. Years & Years, Jess Glynne, Wiz Khalifa, OMI, Lost Frequencies, David Zowie, Charlie Puth, Rachel Platten, Justin Bieber, Sigala, KDA and NHS Choir have all claimed their first number 1 single as a lead artist.
In the albums chart, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and Sam Smith returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2014 with x, Wanted on Voyage and In the Lonely Hour. Mark Ronson, Meghan Trainor, Imagine Dragons, Kendrick Lamar, James Bay, All Time Low, Josh Groban, Years & Years, The Maccabees, Dr. Dre, Cilla Black, Jess Glynne, The Weeknd, Jamie Lawson and 5 Seconds of Summer have all claimed their first number 1 album.
Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars — "Uptown Funk" has spent the most weeks at number 1 in the singles chart with six and Adele — 25 has spent the most weeks at number 1 in the albums chart with five.
Notable events and records
Pharrell Williams — "Happy" notched up its 64th consecutive week in the top 75: an all-time record.
Adele's third album 25 became the fastest-selling UK album of all time, beating a record previously held by Oasis' album Be Here Now in 1997.
Jess Glynne scored three UK number 1 singles this year. Having had two from last year, she shares a record with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini as a British woman with the most UK number 1 singles.
Chart summary
The following summaries refer to the Top 40 Official Singles Chart (not the full Top 100). These charts are archived by The Official Charts Company here.
Up to week ending Saturday 4 July, the date of each chart as given by the Official Charts Company is the Saturday following its publication on Sunday e.g. the chart which is announced by OCC and BBC Radio 1 on Sunday 28 December 2014 would be published under Saturday 3 January 2015. The actual sales, therefore, take place in the previous week, e.g. Chart dated 3 January 2015 comprises sales from 21–27 December 2014 (in this case sales which count towards 2014 totals).
The following week will be published on Sunday 5 July and will end on Thursday 9 July. All future weeks will be published on Friday and end on Thursday e.g. the chart which is announced by OCC and BBC Radio 1 on Friday 10 July 2015 would be published under Thursday 16 July 2015. [4]
