Reginald Doherty defeated Wilberforce Eaves 6-3, 7-5, 2-0 (retired) in the All Comers Final, and then defeated the reigning champion Harold Mahony 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the Challenge Round to win the 1897 Wimbledon Championships.^[1]^[2]
